Wulfson, Virgil Shaw Jr.

Virgil Shaw Wulfson Jr., 89 of College Station, Texas passed away on January 10, 2020.

He was born on October 16, 1930 to Virgil Shaw Wulfson Sr. and Pearl (Lamp) Wulfson in Clintonville, Wisconsin. Gil was raised in Wisconsin during the Depression and learned, by necessity, how to hunt, garden and barter for food and sustenance. These hard times shaped Gil into a resilient man… and a man who loved to hunt. Gil served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War era, earning the rank of Captain. He served as an officer in the Army Ordinance Corps., taught demolitions, EOD, Communications, was on the Army Rifle and Pistol Team, and among many adventures was part of the test the 280mm atomic cannon where they fired the canon then marched within 500 yards of ground zero until finally an order was given for them to halt and return to camp. After his honorable discharge, Gil earned his master’s degree from Wharton School of Finance at The University of Pennsylvania. He worked as a field engineer for the Armstrong Cork Company in Houston and as General Sales and Marketing Manager for Virginia Chemicals which later became Celanese, then was vice president of Continental Research, and later the Sales Manager for Dust Free. He retired to Horseshoe Bay after falling in love with the beauty of the Texas Hill Country. He was an accomplished golfer and was an avid outdoorsman. Gil enjoyed hunting trips with his buddies in the Llano area, fishing trips on the White River in Arkansas, bay fishing excursions in Rockport, Texas and just about anything that involved sunshine and a challenge. Gil enjoyed volunteering with the Hill Country Community Theater in Cottonwood Shores, Texas, and served on the Board of Directors. He played the mayor in Never Too Late (1999), Big Bear in Miss Julie (2001), and Paul in You Can’t Take It With You (2001). Gil is a 32 degree Mason with the Dallas Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and was the President in 2000 of the Highland Lakes Shrine Club of the Ben Hur Shrine Temple. He volunteered as a Transporter for children who were burn victims, crippled or seriously ill – taking them to Shrine hospitals for medical care. Gill will be remembered for his contagious smile and warm countenance. In his 89 years, there were moments of joy and heartache, laughter and tears, and lots of love. He considered himself blessed to have experienced true love twice – first, with his wife and the mother of his children, Mary Lee Wulfson, who passed away after 16 years of marriage and, with his second wife Marjorie Wulfson who was his beloved companion for 34 years and passed away in 2012.

Gill will be lovingly remembered by his son Virgil Shaw Wulflson, III and wife Jean of College Station, TX; son Matthew Crawford Wulfson and wife Cynthia of Houston, TX; daughter Elizabeth Wulfson Dean and husband Bill of Houston, TX, and by is wife Marge’s children: John Knowles, Becky Hanna Fowler and husband Richard, Carolyn Knowles Anderson and husband Terry, Robert Knowles, and eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
