Truckers keep pace with leaders

Viergutz leads Clintonville over Comets

By Greg Seubert

Freedom and Wrightstown appear to be the girls’ basketball teams to beat this season in the North Eastern Conference.

Right behind the Irish and Tigers, however, are the Clintonville Truckers, a team that improved to 8-3 in conference play and 9-4 Jan. 20 with a 72-52 home win over Waupaca.

The Comets trailed for most of the game after taking 2-0 and 4-2 leads on baskets from Savannah Wehmeyer and Seattle Lettau.

Erin Viergutz’s basket gave the Truckers a 6-4 lead in the game’s opening minutes and Clintonville never trailed again.

The Truckers led by as many as nine points in the fist half and took a 29-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Waupaca cut the lead to 31-24 on Finley Charapata’s three-pointer early in the second half, but the Comets never got any closer the rest of the way.

Viergutz led four Clintonville in double figures with 15 points. Selina Torrez chipped in with 12, while Jordan Lehman and Hannah Strong added 11 each.

Waupaca’s Seattle Lettau led all scorers with 20 points. Emma O’Keefe and Charapata added eight each.

Both teams have North Eastern games scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23. Clintonville will host Oconto Falls and Waupaca will travel to Little Chute.
