Fire in New London

Tenants evacuate apartment building

New London firefighters responded to a fire at 4:28 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, at the apartment complex at 315 Oshkosh St. in New London.

They encountered heavy black smoke coming out of apartment 101 on the first floor and extinguished a fire in the kitchen.

The tenants of all the apartments had already evacuated to outside the building.

Firefighters did rescue a small dog and a cat from the smoke-filled apartment. Both appear that they will be fine.

Iglesia De Cristo Minsterios, a church across the street from the complex, provided shelter for the tenants who needed it.

Capt. Don Conat, of the New London Fire department, reported the fire appeared to have started on or near the kitchen stove.

There did not appear to be structural damage to the building. However, there was smoke damage.

Management will assess the damage and work with tenants to return them to their apartments. Many tenants have already returned as of Wednesday morning.

The Red Cross and Salvation Army were at the scene offering assistance.
