Hockey team falls at Expo

Loss won’t help with seeding

By Greg Seubert

It won’t count in the Great Northern Conference boys’ hockey standings, but Waupaca’s 6-1 home loss to Marshfield Jan. 21 won’t help the Comets gain any ground in seeding for the WIAA state tournament.

Marshfield and Waupaca will join six other Great Northern teams – Antigo, Lakeland, Mosinee, Northland Pines, Rhinelander/Three Lakes and Tomahawk – in one of four Division 2 sectionals for the tournament.

Although there’s still plenty of hockey to be played before the tournament, which gets underway Tuesday, Feb. 18, a win over the Tigers would have helped the Comets get a higher seed.

Waupaca already has wins over Antigo and Rhinelander/Three Lakes, but came up short against Lakeland, Mosinee, Northland Pines and now Marshfield.

The Tigers, out of the Wisconsin Valley Conference, outshot the Comets 38-20 at the Waupaca Ice & Expo Center.

Marshfield opened the scoring with Sawyer Schindler’s power-play goal with 2 seconds remaining in the first period and Nick Urban gave the visitors a 2-0 advantage early in the second period.

Jack Erspamer team-leading 15th goal cut the Tigers’ off of an assist from Eli Bartel cut the Tigers’ lead in half, but that turned out to be the only time the Comets scored.

Goals from Tristian Reissmann, Noah Peterson and Schindler gave the Tigers a 5-1 lead heading into the third period before Adam Zee wrapped up the scoring.

Waupaca fell to 6-12-1 on the season and will return to Great Northern play at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31 against Tomahawk at the Expo.

First-round games for the conference tournament are scheduled to be played Tuesday, Feb. 4. Waupaca’s opponent and a location for the game have yet to be determined.
