The Iola-Scandinavia boys’ basketball team continued its winning streak Jan. 21 with an 81-38 Central Wisconsin Conference East Division win over Menominee Indian.

The Thunderbirds improved to 7-0 in division play and 11-0 overall.

“Overall, we played a pretty good game and the guys had a lot of fun,” coach Sam Bertsch. “When you can hold a team to under 40 points, it takes a team effort.”

The T-Birds took a 44-20 lead into the locker room at halftime behind 20 points from Justin Sivertson.

Iola-Scandinavia also outscored the Eagles 37-18 in the second half.

The T-Birds’ Marcus Jaworski had four-pointers in the half and teammate and Connor Kurki added 12.

Sivertson led all scorers with 22 points, while Kurki and Jaworski added 20 and 16, respectively, and Norman Kakwitch led the Eagles with 19.

“It was nice having three guys in double digits,” Bertsch said. “We were very close to having five. It makes things very hard for the opposing team. They can’t key in on one or two guys.”

The T-Birds were able to get 11 different players into the game, which Bertsch sees as a huge morale boost for the team.

“Some of the younger guys getting varsity minutes makes them hungry and just a bit more competitive in practice,” he said.

I-S will travel to Wittenberg Friday, Jan. 24, to face Wittenberg-Birnamwood.

“I think Friday’s game in Wittenberg is going to be a fun test,” Bertsch said. “They just knocked off Bonduel and I’m sure want to have a better showing than when they played here. They are a young, talented group of guys. They will give us an excellent game.”
