A North Eastern Conference win has eluded the Waupaca girls’ basketball team so far this season.

The Comets had their best chance Jan. 27, but ended up on the short end of a 66-63 score to Luxemburg-Casco.

Waupaca fell to 0-12 in conference games, while the Spartans improved to 4-8.

Neither team led by more than seven points in the game. Luxemburg-Casco used a 10-0 run to take an early 13-6 lead before the Comets took their first lead – 18-17 – on Ella Snyder’s basket.

Waupaca had four-point leads twice in the first half, but trailed 30-28 at halftime.

The Spartans eventually built a 42-37 lead in the second half, but a 12-4 run helped the Comets take a 49-46 lead. That turned out to be Waupaca’s biggest lead of the second half.

The lead changed hands three more times before Lauren Adams’ two free throws gave the Spartans a 65-60 lead with less than a minute remaining.

Finley Charapata’s three-pointer cut the Spartans’ lead to 65-63 with five seconds to go and the Comets got the ball back with 3.9 seconds on the clock after the Spartans’ Sophia Hanmann made one of two free throws.

However, the Comets were unable to get off a game-tying shot before the buzzer sounded.

Olivia Levine led Waupaca with 19 points, while Charapata and Madi Wennesberg also finished in double figures with 12 and 11, respectively.

Adams and Taylor Thiry led the Spartans with 20 points each.

Waupaca traveled to Shawano Jan. 28 for a nonconference game and will return to North Eastern play at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at Marinette.
