Why so many candidates are running unopposed

After reading the Jan. 16, 2020 edition of the Waupaca County Post I am compelled to write this letter after asking myself two questions:

• Why are so many candidates and elected officials running unopposed in the April 7, 2020 election?

• Why is the voter turnout of registered voters so low for the local April elections?

Of the six (the mayor and five city council) running for reelection, only one is running opposed and five unopposed.

Of the two school board members running for reelection, both of them are running unopposed.

In the last three (‘17,’18,’19) April elections, on average, only 26.3% of registered voters voted.

Where are the citizens of the city of Waupaca? What are they doing, or not doing? They should be active, participating, and getting involved in the local city and school district elections. They should be voting and running for office.

One reason could be that most people don’t want to vote because there is no one to vote for or against.

They don’t want to vote for an unopposed candidate. What would be the use/sense in in doing that?

My answer to these questions lies in the citizens’ ignorance and apathy.

Meaning that they don’t know and they don’t care. Too bad, so sad.
