Public meeting on State 49

DOT seeks input on improvements in Iola and Scandinavia

A meeting will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, to discuss State Highway 49 between Depot Street in Scandinavia and the south intersection of State Highway 161 in Iola.

A brief presentation will be given, and the remainder of the meeting will follow an open house format.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has identified the following needs on this section of the highway:

• Pavement surface is deteriorating, including cracking and rutting.

• Some pedestrian curb ramps do not meet the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility standards.

• Guard rail near Depot Street in Scandinavia has exceeded its useful service life and does not meet current criteria.

The purpose of the proposed project is to extend the life of the existing pavement.

The proposed improvements include:

• Resurfacing the roadway by removing the top later of asphalt and applying a new surface layer.

• Widening the existing 11-foot lanes and variable width shoulders to 12-foot lanes with centerline rumble strips and 3-foot paved shoulders from North Main Street in Scandinavia to County B East.

• Pedestrian curb ramps not meeting ASA accessibility standards will be replaced.

It is anticipated that replacement of the curb ramps will require some minor acquisition of temporary easement and/or permanent right of way at some properties.

• The sidewalk from Division Street to Ellefson Street in Iola will be replaced, along with the pedestrian curb ramps.

Minor temporary easement and permanent right of way acquisition will be required.

• The existing guard rail near Depot Street in Scandinavia will be replaced.

The objective of the meeting is to discuss the identified needs, obtain input on the proposed improvements and gather information to help minimize traffic impacts.

The project is currently scheduled for 2022 construction if a build alternative is selected.

Those who have questions or cannot attend the meeting may contact Teri Schopp, project manager at DAAR Engineering, at 920-342-2176 or [email protected].
