Comets cruise over Hatchets

Erspamer scores four goals

By Greg Seubert

Tomahawk held the Waupaca boys’ hockey team scoreless in the third period of their Great Northern Conference game.

It didn’t matter, however, as Waupaca found the net seven times in the first period and the Comets went on to hand the Hatchets a 10-2 loss Jan. 31 at the Waupaca Ice and Expo Center.

Tomahawk didn’t have an answer for Jack Erspamer, who had a hat trick in the first period and went on to finish the game with four goals and three assists.

The win also helped the Comets get a home game for the first round of the GNC tournament, which kicked off Feb. 4 with four games.

Waupaca received a No. 4 seed and hosted No. 5 Antigo. Other first-round pairings from Feb. 4 are No. 8 Tomahawk and No. 1 Northland Pines, No. 6 Rhinelander at No. 3 Mosinee and No. 7 Medford at No. 2 Lakeland.

Braeden Ryan opened the scoring and Erspamer’s first two goals gave Waupaca a 3-0 lead. The Comets weren’t finished, as Davis Levine, Erspamer, Liam DeZurik-Otto and Eli Bartel found the net to give the Comets a 7-0 lead at the first intermission.

Tomahawk cut into the lead in the second period with goals from Caleb Lund and Dominic Zattera, but the Comets answered with goals from Max Gusmer, Bartel and Erspamer.

Jed Vanden Bush shared the assist lead with Erspamer with three, while Jadyn Schulke added two and Bartel, Gusmer, Levine, Garret Bohm and Josh Kacovsky added one each.

The Comets finished with 46 shots on goal. Twelve of Tomahawk’s 22 goals came in the first period.

If Waupaca defeats the Red Robins Feb. 4, the Comets would likely head to Eagle River to face Northland Pines in the second round of the tournament at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11. If Antigo defeats Waupaca, the Comets would likely host a rematch with Tomahawk at 7 p.m. Feb. 11.
