Film on San Francisco earthquake

Starring Clark Gable, Jeanette MacDonald, Spencer Tracy

The Waupaca Area Public Library will screen “San Francisco” at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27.

This is the fourth film in the February series of movies based on actual events.

“San Francisco” focuses on the massive earthquake of April 18, 1906, and the weeks leading up to the natural disaster that devastated the city and its people.

Dr. Jack Rhodes will introduce the film, which stars Clark Gable, Jeanette MacDonald and Spencer Tracy.

Rhodes said the special effects produced for this film remain impressive even after the technological improvements that have occurred since the 1936 release date.

“The earthquake sequences have an eerie style, creating a sense of immediacy amid several ‘You Are There’ moments of tragedy, heroism and sudden death,” he said.

The film won the Academy Award for best sound recording and received five other nominations, including best picture and Spencer Tracy for best actor. The production is under the direction of W. S. Van Dyke.

The event is free and open to the public. Popcorn, sodas and theater treats will be served.
