NL students earn awards

Transitioning from middle to high school

The mission of New London High School’s Freshmen Academy is to guide ninth graders as they transition from middle school to high school.

On what is called “Freshmen First Day” in early September, NLHS Freshmen Academy teachers encouraged all incoming ninth graders to do their best academically and become active members of a school-sponsored club, activity or sport.

At the end of the first semester, 51 students had done exactly that – earned a GPA of 3.33 or higher and were part of a co-curricular group or team.

Activities Director Philip Sloma spoke at the event, congratulating the award winners and encouraging all students to make the most of the opportunities they have at NLHS, both in and out of the classroom.

“Freshman year is an important time,” added Brian Mathu, co-coordinator for Freshmen Academy. “Success as a ninth grader sets the stage for further success in high school and beyond.”
