Shooting suspect arrested

Cardoso taken into custody at gunpoint

Jonathan Cardoso, 27, Waupacaa, is charged with first-degree attempted homicide, felon in possession of a firearm, fleeing an officer and possession of marijuana.

At 10:45 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, an anonymous 911 caller reported he had shot his girlfriend in the head.

He refused to identify himself and said he still had the gun.

According to the criminal complaint, the caller said, “You guys got to kill me if you want me.”

He reportedly claimed to have a bomb and that his girlfriend was in the trunk of his car.

He did not immediately identify his girlfriend or where she lived.

Police received a tip that the caller was driving a black Dodge pickup with a plow attached.

After police located the truck, a 30-minute chase ensued.

While dispatch continued negotiating with the driver during the entire chase, Clintonville police deployed stop sticks and the truck came to a stop.

Identified as Cardoso, the driver exited the truck but reportedly still had a gun in his hands.

“Officers shouted commands to drop the gun and Cardosa refused to comply,” the complaint says. “Cardoso pretended to put the gun down on multiple occasions but continued to hold it.”

Eventually, police took him into custody.

Waupaca police located the victim at her home. She had suffered a gunshot wound to her face.

She was airifted to ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Neenah, where she is listed in critical condition.

Cardoso told investigators he was upset with his girlfriend because he suspected she was cheating on him.

He fired his weapon at her three times and hit her once, the complaint says.

Police reported finding marijuana when they searched Cardoso.

He is currently in custody and scheduled for an initial court appearance on Wednesday, Feb. 26.

Cardosa is charged as a repeat offender.

He was convicted in Waupaca County of felony third-degree sexual assault on March 1, 2018, and placed on three years of probation.

Cardoso faces up to 60 years in prison if convicted of first-degree attempted homicide.
