Suspect charged with battery

Victim sent to hospital with fractured face

Joseph K. Kuhnke, 22, New London, is charged with substantial battery and disorderly conduct.

At 12:20 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, New London police were dispatched to ThedaCare in New London where they met with Blake Piotter, 32. His face was severely injured and his right eye was swollen shut.

Medical staff told the officers the victim had multiple fractures to the right side of his face that would require surgery.

According to the criminal complaint, Kuhnke punched the man outside of Copper Shot in New London.

Video at the time of the incident shows Kuhnke and his girlfriend, Aubree Kopitzke, standing in front of the bar with another couple.

Danielle Zuege allegedly came out of the bar, pushed Kopitzke out of the way and yelled at the other woman.

Koptizke threw her drink at Zuege, and the two allegedly begin hitting each other and pulling hair.

Piotter came out of the bar and tried to separate the two women.

Kuhnke then punched Piotter, who immediately dropped to the ground and lay motionless for a few moments, the complaint says.

Piotter is then seen on the video stumbling around the street, falling down several times.

Kuhnke has been released from custody on a $1,000 signature bond with the condition that he maintain absolute sobriety and stay out of bars.
