Polar Bears top Hodags

Sectional final up next for Hortonville

By Greg Seubert

In the end, it was too much Hortonville and not enough Rhinelander.

The Polar Bears advanced to their fifth consecutive WIAA Division 2 girls’ basketball sectional final March 5 with an 87-27 win over the Hodags.

Hortonville will now face Onalaska in a sectional final at 5 p.m. Saturday, March, 7, at Marshfield High School. Onalaska advanced with a 52-46 win over New Richmond in the other semifinal.

The winner of that game will advance to a state semifinal game at 1:35 p.m. Friday, March 13, at the Resch Center in Green Bay.

The Polar Bears had three players in double figures by halftime and took a 59-15 lead into the locker room at the break.

It didn’t get any better for the Hodags in the second half, as the Polar Bears held them to 12 points.

Morgan Draheim scored 17 of her game-high 22 points in the first half for Hortonville. Aliyah Schmidt added 19 points and Macy McGlone and Lexi Day finished with 12 and 11, respectively.

Cynthia Beavers led Rhinelander with 13 points.

Hortonville improved to 24-1 on the season and won for the 24th straight time, while the Hodags ended their season with a 19-6 record.
