Students surveyed about bullying at school

By Holly Neumann

Little Wolf High School Principal Dan Wolfgram discussed the results of the student safety survey when the school board met on Feb. 24.

The board requested the survey after a community stakeholders meeting about the School Resource Officer (SRO) was held last December.

“We thought it was important to get our student input,” Wolfgram said.

Students in grades 7–12 were surveyed.

Of the 313 possible surveys, there were 250 respondents, for a return rate of 80%.

Bullying

The survey dealt with five categories: bullying-verbal; bullying-physical; physical fight; feeling safe and secure at school; and school resource officer safety and security.

In the past 30 days, 16% of students said they had been verbally bullied at school, while 84% had not.

Five percent of students reported physical bullying while 95% did not.

Ten students (4%) reported getting into physical fights in the last 30 days.

“The interpretation of a physical fight is left up to the questionnaire,” said Wolfgram. “Over the past two months, administration was only made aware of two physical altercations in the school, which did not even result in suspension.”

The survey further indicated 75% of students feel safe at school always or most of the time, 15% feel safe sometimes and 10% rarely or never feel safe.

When asked if they would feel safer with a SRO available, 55% said they would always feel safe, 36% sometimes safe and 9% said they would never feel safe.

The district will continue to review the subject of an SRO.

During March, district residents will receive a School Perception Survey to voice their opinions about an SRO and other topics.
