Polar Bears top Bulldogs

Hortonville wins D2 regional

A fast start helped the Hortonville boys’ basketball team win a regional championship.

The Polar Bears outscored New London 34-12 in the first half March 7 and went on to hand the Bulldogs a 60-45 loss in a WIAA Division 2 regional final at Hortonville High School.

Both teams had advanced in the state tournament with regional semifinal wins over Antigo and Shawano.

Hortonville 60, New London 45

The Bulldogs chipped away at Hortonville’s lead in the second half and eventually cut it to 10 points with just over five minutes remaining, but couldn’t get any closer.

Conner Brinkman and Gabe Wohlt led Hortonville with 17 and 10 points, respectively.

Hortonville 79, Antigo 75

The Polar Bears led by as many as 32 points in the second half, but had to hold off the Red Robins’ late rally.

Hortonville used nine three-pointers to take a 47-25 halftime lead.

Antigo used the three-pointer to get back into the game in the second half after the Polar Bears used a 10-0 run to take a 57-25 lead.

The Red Robins used a 15-0 run to cut the lead to 61-45. A 14-2 run that included three three-pointers and a three-point play made it 73-69 with just under a minute remaining.

Hortonville quickly pushed the lead back to eight points with Jayqon Owens’ three-point play before the Red Robins trimmed the lead to four points in the final seconds.

Parker Lawrence led Hortonville with 22 points, while Antigo’s Andrew Heinzen led Antigo with 19.

Hortonville will now face Mosinee at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 12, in a sectional semifinal at Wausau East High School. The winner will advance to a sectional final at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at Waupaca High School.

New London 51, Shawano 36

The Bulldogs led 18-13 at halftime before outscoring the Hawks 33-23 in the second half.

Wohlt led New London with 17 points, while Brinkman and Ben Porath chipped in with 11 and 10, respectively.
