City looks to improve bleacher safety
Clintonville uncertain about labor costs

The city of Clintonville is seeking estimates of the cost to install aluminum planks to both bleacher units at W.A. Olen Athletic Field.
The planks are to prevent falls.
Parks and Recreation Director Justin Mc Auly, informed the city’s Parks & Recreation Committee of that fact in his director update dated Feb. 20.
In that update, Mc Auly said he had acquired estimates for material, but was unsure of what the labor cost would be. He wasn’t sure if a bleacher company would take on this type of project.
“This is quite a unique project with installation of angle iron brackets to our existing infrastructure and bolting the planks to the iron brackets,” Mc Auly said in the update.
The cost of materials for the project is estimated to be $35,023.
“This will be a time-consuming job, so I am not sure what a skilled laborer would charge for installation,” Mc Auly said.
He added that City Administrator Sharon Eveland is researching into a possible grant for the bleachers.
Safety concerns regarding the bleachers at W.A. Olen Athletic Field first came to light after the city commissioned a facilities study by Barrientos Design & Consulting in 2019.
According to the study the concerns revolve around the bleachers being open with no riser panel. This could allow a small child to slip and fall through them.
The ramps leading to the north grandstand are also not ADA accessible and are “too steep for typical pedestrian traffic. This grandstand also doesn’t have any ADA accessible seating.
Because of the safety concerns, the study recommended all the bleachers be replaced. It placed an estimated cost of $100,000 to do so.
In addition, the bleachers under the roof also have no riser panels, which could allow small children to fall through.
