No St. Patrick’s Day parade

New London cancels nearly all events

In response to Gov. Tony Evers declaring a state health emergency on Thursday, March 12, New London has canceled nearly all of its events planned for the week of March 16-21.

New London Police Chief Jeffrey Schlueter emailed a press release to media Friday morning.

The release noted the Wisconsin Department of Health and Human Services “recommends that all non-essential gatherings of 250 or more people be canceled or postponed statewide to help protect Wisconsinites from the spread of COVID-19, particularly those who are most vulnerable to infection and severe disease.”

New London city officials consulted with the health departments in Waupaca and Outagamie counties, Waupaca County Emergency Management and ThedaCare.

After evaluating all the information, the Shamrock Club and city officials decided to cancel all events except for the changing signs for the city’s name from New London to New Dublin and the Hooligan Day corned beef dinners at area restaurants.

Among the cancelled events were caroling at nursing homes and Irish entertainment at New London High School and at Crystal Falls Banquet Facility.

“Rest assured, this decision was not taken lightly as we understand the positive economic and social benefits this event has for New London businesses and the community as a whole,” according to the press release. “However, complying with federal and state recommendations at this time is more important as the health of New London residents is our first priority.”

City officials urged residents to avoid contact or interaction with crowds, wash hands frequently, cover sneezes and coughs and stay home if they feel sick.
