Drowning in Weyauwega

Man walked onto ice to save dog

A 30-year-old man drowned shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, in rural Weyauwega.

According to the Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office, a 911 call reported that the man had gone onto a pond in an attempt to rescue a dog that had fallen through the ice.

Waupaca County deputies, Weyauwega police and firefighter and Gold Cross paramedics responded to the call.

The dog escaped the pond before emergency personnel arrived at the scene.

At about 4:10 p.m., Weyauwega firefighters located the man in the pond, brought him to shore, and assisted ambulance crews with resuscitation efforts.

Gold Cross transported the man to ThedaCare Medical Center in Waupaca.

The Waupaca County Medical Examiner’s Office pronounced the man dead at the hospital.
