City’s 16th street project

Clintonville contracts for engineering

By Bert Lehman

The city of Clintonville will contract with Kunkel Engineering Group for engineering services for asphalt paving and drainage improvements for 16th Street.

At its April 14 meeting, the city council authorized City Administrator Sharon Eveland to sign a contract with Kunkel Engineering in an amount not to exceed $4,160 for the engineering work.

A memo from Eveland to council members said the work on 16th Street will take place between Robert Street and Industrial Avenue.

“We included repaving this section as part of the developer’s agreement with the apartment complex,” Eveland said.

The city originally thought it could do everything inhouse.

“The initial assessment, which came from the previous public works manager, was that we could do a simple mill and pave, but after further review, there are some other issues there that may need to get addressed,” Eveland said. “In order to ensure we are doing the road properly, including providing adequate drainage, I feel it is best we hire an engineering firm to design this section.

The project will be funded by TIF 8, the tax incremental district where the new apartment buildings are located.

“We do have money budgeted in the TIF,” Eveland said.

She added that the project was not placed out to bids because of its “limited size and scope,” as well as the fact Kunkel is already providing the city engineering services on the 2021 road project.

“It makes sense to let them piggyback off that to provide this service,” Eveland said.
