Preparing for ‘shovel ready’

Hortonville clears land for development

By John Faucher

Crews completed survey work and initial clearing of a 1.12 acre parcel of land adjacent to Gilbert’s grocery store in the village of Hortonville last week.

The land is located in the village’s Tax Incremental Financing District 3 and being made shovel ready for future development.

Village Administrator David DeTroye gave board members an update at a May 7 meeting.

He said crews would return to the site to do a final cut and clearing of the land before excavation begins.

Plans are to process the wood product into mulch and firewood on site, DeTroye said.

DeTroye told the board the village is receiving a lot of calls from citizens requesting mulch and wood from the site.

“As soon as we get it processed I think it would be a good idea to make it available for residents to come and pick it up,” said DeTroye.

Immel Excavating is under contract for excavation of the property and crews will start reshaping the lot this week.

“The intent is to give a better lay of the land so the prospective buyers can take a look at it and make a commitment on the property,” DeTroye said.

He said some of the material and soil content could be used as fill on several other village projects.

“That is some of the best sand you’re going to find in the area,” DeTroye told the board.

The village could use some of the material for fill at Otto Miller Park and potential areas at the cemetery.

He said trucking costs for moving the fill to the two facilities would potentially come out of the Otto Miller Park and the cemetery reserve funds.
