Community donates $12,000 in 10 days

When the schools closed due to COVID-19, the situation was particularly difficult for graduating seniors and their families.

News came out the May 31 ceremony would be virtual.

Parents reached out to each other in hopes of finding an additional way to celebrate their children.

A Facebook group was created, and many ideas were shared.

After a couple days of discussion, a smaller group of moms organized a ”project team” to pull something together.

The first part of the project was to make a Facebook page honoring the seniors.

“Celebrate Waupaca Comet Seniors 2020” has dozens of students highlighted with photos and a description of their accomplishments and future plans.

The second part of the project was to make banners with the students’ photos on them.

The group contacted the city and both Mayor Brian Smith and City Administrator Aaron Jenson were behind the idea and found a way to get the banners on display.

The team made another Facebook page “Waupaca Adopt A Senior 2020” to promote and raise funds.

The goal was set to raise at least $60 per student.

Farmers State Bank helped the group set up an account, where community members and businesses could deposit donations.

The next week was a flurry of activity as the group collected photographer releases, photos and funds.

Community support

In just 10 days, the people of Waupaca donated $12,000, and all 168 students were sponsored.

Banners were ordered from Office Outfitters, and the city is putting them up throughout the community.

The banners will be up for about three weeks, and then given to the students with a gift bag.

The bag will include a couple surprise gifts and various gift cards, coupons and products from local businesses.

The mothers who took on this project are appreciative of the Waupaca community for its help.

It would not have been possible without the hustle of parents and students and the donations from businesses, families and friends.

The list of congratulating sponsors will be given to the graduates, and also shared publicly.

The list is growing, so the team does not want to release it quite yet.

The team is excited for the day when the seniors see their banners around the city, and feel the support and caring of the people who have watched them grow up.
