Waupaca County ending public health order

COVID-19 restrictions expire June 14

By Robert Cloud

Waupaca County will not extend the public health order it issued on May 14.

The county’s May 14 order was in response to the state Supreme Court decision overturning the governor’s Safer at Home order.

The county’s temporary order is set to expire on June 14.

Waupaca County Health Services continues to recommend that businesses and non-profit organizations follow the strategies and practices required by the order.

Developed by the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp.  and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the guidelines included social distancing of at least 6 feet, employees wearing masks and working behind plexiglass barriers, frequent cleaning and disinfecting of high-contact surfaces and frequent handwashing.

Without the order in effect, mass gatherings of more than 50 people will no longer be prohibited.

However, Waupaca County Health Officer Jed Wohlt recommends that people avoid gatherings where they are unable to maintain adequate social distancing from people they do not live with.

Businesses, non-profits and other entities should voluntarily continue to reduce capacity and modify physical spaces to ensure adequate physical distancing for customers and staff.

“This situation will continue to evolve and may require future orders to protect the public’s health and safety,” Wohlt said in a June 11 statement. “In making those future decisions Waupaca County will be guided by the following principles:

• Protecting public health and safety are our primary responsibility.

• Continuation and resumption of business and personal activity is essential to the well-being of our community.

• Scientific data and local information must guide our public health decision-making.”
