Lake Weyauwega to host fireworks

Places to view July 3 show

A different location for Weyauwega’s July 3 fireworks display means there are some new options for viewing the show.

This year’s fireworks show is taking place near the middle of Lake Weyauwega.

“This option allows for more community residents to view from their homes and doesn’t encourage a large gathering with other activities as in the past. The fireworks show will have more powerful fireworks that will rise higher in the sky for better viewing from all directions, and there will not be any ground type fireworks,” City Administrator Jeremy Schroeder said in a June 17 news release.

When the common council met on June 15, it unanimously approved moving the annual fireworks show to that location.

All members were present.

The council felt it was important to have something for the community but noted there needed to be changes to try to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Schroeder explained.

He said several businesses support the show going forward in this manner.

They are allowing those who want a closer view to use their parking lots to watch the display.

This includes the gravel semi staging area at Agropur, gravel lot at Taylor Cheese, city lot by the vacant grocery store and also St. Peter Lutheran’s church and school paved lots.

“We simply ask those that use those lots respect their property, stay by their vehicle practicing social distancing, to not gather with others from outside their family and not leave any waste or materials behind,” Schroeder said. “We also will close down Parkview Lane by the Kaminske Recreation area and Peterson Park on the north shore of the lake.”

The fireworks show is expected to begin between 9:30 and 9:45 p.m.

“We realize that some may appreciate and welcome the change and others have become accustomed to the regular show at the fairgrounds,” Schroeder said. “However, all options needed to be fully examined, and the final decision was in the best interest for safety of our citizens and community while still providing the event.”
