Golden Rule applies to politics

To whomever has been stealing and defacing “Trump 2020” campaign signs:

There has been an outbreak of vandalism in the New London area against political signs supporting President Donald Trump on the property of homeowners and businesses. This letter is to those who have been doing this.

Please cease your criminal behavior, apologize for your actions, and restore those signs (or if you have destroyed them, restore the value of them) to the homeowners and businesses from whom you took them! If you do this, the owners will accept your apology. If you do not, your actions will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law if you are caught.

Further (even if you do not get caught), you are making your candidate look bad and this will have a negative effect on public perception of your candidate during this election. I am sure you feel that your candidate must be better, but the ends do not justify the means. Here is an aside to the Waupaca County Democratic Party and the Biden Campaign: I doubt that your campaign would sanction this type of act of vandalism. I know some of you, and those that I do know are honorable people who just disagree with the president’s positions.

But I would ask you to publicly call upon any who support your candidates to refrain from illegal acts as a way of furthering your ticket. This will be duly noted if you do, as well as if you do not.

Also, here is a word to Trump supporters: Please do not stoop to the tactics that these vandals have been using. Please continue on the high road. As St. Paul said in the book of Romans, “Do not repay evil for evil, but overcome evil with good.”

We are blessed to live in a Republic where we settle our differences at the ballot box, and not by vigilante actions. Let’s try to keep it that way.
