Hortonville OKs reopening plan

Students will have option to learn in classroom or online

By John Faucher

The Hortonville School Board approved a 2020-21 reopening plan at its July 13 meeting.

District Administration presented an overview of the plan.

All elements of the plan reflect guidance provided by the Centers for Disease Control, Department of Health Services and Department of Public Instruction.

The district also used stakeholder survey results to determine a vision aligned with local values and needs.

Board members, staff and parents were informed that the goal of the district is to remain open for daily student instruction.

However, the reopening plan is subject to change based on current guidance from public health.

The goal of the plan also provides district families with an option for virtual education.

Families may select in-person or online learning in Skyward, through the enrollment process.

In addition to various instructional delivery methods planned for both on and off campus, the district will implement increased cleaning and disinfecting procedures in all buildings.

Social distancing, facial coverings and building access guidelines are included in the plan.

Only students and staff will be allowed in the buildings.

Staff will wear facial coverings and students will be highly encouraged to wear them throughout the day.

All drinking fountains will be turned off and students encouraged to bring their own water bottles. Filling stations will be provided in all buildings.

Changes will be made in facilities and procedures to eliminate high frequency touch areas such as bathrooms and classroom doors.

Desk shields will be installed in high volume student areas and all workspaces will be cleaned hourly. Physical barriers will be installed for bus drivers and office staff and assigned seating occurs in buses and all school areas.

Every classroom is equipped with sanitizer and wipes and each building will have designed safety areas for students and staff who feel ill.

Schedules and movements in buildings will be changed and adjustments made to minimize large gatherings of students, including food service operations.

Technology

Computer and internet options will be provided for students in need.

The district will work with its library media specialist to access Common School Funds to provide for student needs and prepare resources for at-school and at-home learners.

Extended technology support will be provided for families, students and staff.

Mental health awareness

District staff will be closely monitoring student social and emotional needs.

Due to the prolonged absence from school environments and COVID-19, staff anticipates increased mental health and behavioral needs for some students.

Safe and supportive learning environments will be provided in all buildings and universal mental health screening is available for all grade levels.
