Fireflies, stars and monarchs

Mosquito Hill schedules summer programs

Mosquito Hill Nature Center’s summer schedule includes an upcoming firefly hike, an evening of watching stars and a monarch butterfly tagging event.

The hike will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15.

Naturalist Adam Brandt will lead a walk to look for fireflies and other insects active at night. He will share information about fireflies and what makes them glow, as well as facts about other critters like crickets and katydids.

The cost is $8 or $6 for students, senior citizens and Friends of Mosquito Hill members.

Registration and payment are required by Tuesday, Aug. 11.

The Northeast Wisconsin Stargazers will offer an evening of stargazing at 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28.

NEWSTAR member Curtis Dachelet will demonstrate the immense size of the solar system, galaxies and nebula found in Wisconsin’s summer night sky and introduce participants to things in the sky that are “hidden in plain sight.”

Outdoor stargazing will follow, weather permitting.

The cost is $6 per person or $4 for students, seniors citizens and Friends of Mosquito Hill. Registration and payment are required by Tuesday, Aug. 25.

Monarch tagging

The monarch butterfly tagging program will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5.

With its colorful orange and black pattern, the monarch has the distinction of being the only butterfly in the world that migrates vast distances to its wintering grounds.

Nature center staff, working with researchers, apply small, self-adhesive tags to the hind wings of monarchs that emerge late in the summer.

Individual identification numbers track populations from the monarch’s habitat east of the Rocky Mountains to the forested mountains of central Mexico. Tracking tagged individuals allows researchers to learn more about behavior, lifespan and migration routes, some as long as 2,000 miles.

Participants will learn how safely handle, tag and release monarchs.

The cost is $6 per person or $10 per household and registration and payment are due by Friday, Aug. 28.

Class size is limited and mask use is required inside of the center’s interpretive building.

The center is located 2 miles east of New London off of County Trunk S at N3880 Rogers Road.

The center is not able to accommodate walk-in registrations. Those interested in attending the events are asked to call the center at 920-779-6433 to register and pay. A complete summer calendar of events can be found at www.mosquitohill.com and on the center’s Facebook page.
