New things coming to Veterans Memorial

Art League to paint mural, city to add name locator

By John Faucher

The New London Veterans Memorial Foundation has approved two designs for a veterans-themed mural on the west side of the New London Veterans Memorial.

Veterans Memorial Foundation Chairman Jim Jaeger said the group sponsored a $1,000 award and worked closely with the Wolf River Art League to solicit the winning designs.

Jaeger said the painting will be located on the wall of C&R Waterfront Bar and Grill. It will be completed next spring by members of the Wolf River Art League.

“We’re very pleased with the designs that came through, and we’re excited to see the painting next spring,” said Jaeger. “The Memorial Foundation will cover the cost of the murals and make a donation to the Wolf River Art League for their assistance in the project.”

Jaeger said after the murals are completed, the foundation will contract with Wolfrath’s Landscaping to install additional landscaping on the park’s west side.

City website adds name locator

Jaeger said there are now over 1,000 veterans’ names on the memorial walls in the park.

Visitors can now take a picture of a QR code posted at the park’s information kiosk and go directly to a city website that features a locate assist.

“Simply type in the name of the veteran you are searching for and the site will tell you where to look,” said Jaeger.

There is still room to add names on the memorial walls.

Jaeger said the deadline to have names added to the wall by Veterans Day is Oct. 1.

Application forms are available at Taft Park, City Hall, the New London Parks and Recreation office and the New London Chamber of Commerce office.
