Marcom commits to Central Michigan

Waupaca senior to play college football

Football or basketball?

For Hunter Marcom, the decision turned out to be a no-brainer.

The Waupaca High School senior recently accepted Central Michigan University’s offer of a full-ride scholarship to play football at the school, located in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.

The Chippewas compete in the West Division of the Division 1 Mid-American Conference.

“It’s really a dream come true,” Marcom said. “Every kid my age growing up playing football has dreamed of being able to play D1 on Saturdays.”

He expects to play tight end for the Chippewas.

“I only committed a couple of days ago, so there’s a lot we still have to discuss,” he said. “I’m sure I’ll figure that out in the next few weeks.”

Several teams had contacted Marcom about joining them.

“It started to pick up this summer,” he said. “Central Michigan had a regional recruiter for this part of the country. He reached out to me initially, introduced himself, introduced the program and hooked me up with their tight ends coach. He and I started talking right away and formed a really great relationship over the last couple of months.”

He said he also had interest from Harvard, Northern Illinois, Syracuse, Nevada and Air Force and had an offer on the table from Valparaiso.

“Initially, my plan was to wait a little bit, see what was happening and try to get a couple more visits,” Marcom said. “I won’t be able to go anywhere until after January and I definitely want to know where I’m going.

“It’s not that Central Michigan wasn’t good enough,” he said. “It definitely is. I just wanted to wait it out. Everything was lining up perfectly for me to head there. I decided that it was the best decision to lock down my spot as soon as I could.”

“We did a normal campus tour with one of the students there,” he said. “It’s definitely a big campus in a smaller town. There was a bunch of recent construction and a bunch of additions to the football facilities. It was a top-notch campus, from what I could tell.”

Football isn’t the only sport that Marcom plays. At some point, he had to decide whether it would be football or basketball in college.

“It was actually really tough,” he said. “It was mid-summer where I had to decide. Ultimately, I just want to play college sports at the highest level possible and football was giving me that opportunity.”

He’s happy to have his scholarship locked up before his final season of high school football kicks off Friday, Sept. 25, as the Comets travel to Luxemburg-Casco.

“It’s a huge pressure lifted off my shoulders,” he said. “It was something I was thinking about pretty much all day every day. Now I know where I’m going.”

Marcom will play for coach Jim McElwain, former offensive coordinator under Nick Saban at Alabama and former head coach at Florida.

“I think last year was his first season,” he said. “They went from a really low record to playing in the MAC Championship game last year. I’ve been on the phone with him a couple times and he seems like an outstanding coach.”

Marcom recalled getting his scholarship offer earlier this summer while on the telephone with the Chippewas’ tight ends coach.

“He told me they wanted to offer me a full scholarship and the first thing I could think of was going to see my parents and telling them,” Marcom said.

“I knew they’d be as excited or more excited as I was, especially my dad,” he said. “When they told me they were offering me a full scholarship and I could go there and play football at the highest level and come out of there with no student loans or anything, it’s really hard to put into words.”
