Manawa to open season at home

By Greg Seubert

Take a look at the roster and it’s easy to tell why Manawa football coach Brad Johnson is excited about his team’s upcoming season.

The Wolves are coming off of an 8-3 season last year that included a trip to the second round of the WIAA playoffs.

They also have several first-team all-conference players back from that team, including junior Mason Wiesner, last year’s offensive player of the year in the Central Wisconsin Conference-Large and a first-team quarterback, punter and defensive back.

“The season has started off well,” Johnson said. “We scrimmaged Bonduel and really learned a lot about ourselves. We have a tough team with a lot of really good kids. We expect a plethora of players to do their part to make this season a success.”

Besides Wiesner, other first-team all-conference players from last year are seniors Andrew Elmhorst (offensive lineman); Riley Krenke (wide receiver); and Deion Stroud (defensive lineman); and junior Colin Moser (linebacker).

Other all-conference players back for the Wolves are second-teamers Moser (offensive lineman), Krenke (linebacker) and junior Andrew Niemuth (defensive lineman); and honorable mention selections Elmhorst (defensive lineman) and junior Bryan Griffin (linebacker).

“We also expect big things from Alex Meidl, Grant Bristol, Bryce Bartel, Ayden Voss, Brandon Bierman and Isaac Westphal, to name a few,” Johnson said.

The Wolves are back in the CWC-Large this season, but there are some changes. Iola-Scandinavia is now in the CWC-Small and the revamped CWC-Large now includes Stratford, Nekoosa, and Spencer/Columbus Catholic, as well as longtime CWC-Large teams Weyauwega-Fremont, Amherst, Shiocton and Wittenberg-Birnamwood.

The Wolves will host Shiocton at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, in the season opener for both teams.
