Miller, Thomas

Thomas “Tom” Miller, age 78, of Big Falls passed away Sunday, September 27, 2020 at his home.

Thomas Douglas Miller was born on July 6, 1942 in Milwaukee to Adolph and Edna (Rustad) Miller. He graduated from Marion High School in 1960. Tom entered the U.S. Army and served from 1964-1966. He was united in marriage on August 10, 1968 to Mary P. Tomcek. Tom said, “there is no hunting in August…fishing is not good…might as well get married in August!” The couple lived in Milwaukee until they bought his parent’s farm in 1972 in the Town of Wyoming, Waupaca County. In 1974 Tom and Mary started dairy farming full-time until the cows were sold in March of 1997. Then he drove dump truck for Jerry Sauby Excavating for several years.

In 1975 Tom started as sexton and caretaker of Big Falls Cemetery and has also been Cemetery Board President since 1983. He served for 22 years on the Town of Wyoming Board; first as Supervisor and then as Chairman. Tom is a former President of MACYI (Marion Area Christian Youth Initiative) for many years running the New Year’s Eve parties at the High School and the basketball tournaments.

Tom was a longtime active member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Big Falls, serving three different terms as Council President, Sunday School storyteller, and leading the children sermons on Sunday mornings. Tom loved hunting, fishing, and watching his grandchildren’s activities. He also enjoyed the Via de Cristo weekend retreats.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Mary; and four sons, Scott (Cindy) Miller of Boulder, CO; Dan (DeAnna) Miller of Medford, John (Rita) Miller of Sussex, and Luke (Amy) Miller of Cedarburg. There are eight grandchildren: Jobe, Abe, Martha, Peter, Kevin, Madison, Sawyer, and Owen. There are two sisters, Carole Martin of Milwaukee and Jane Hancock of Goreville, IL. He is further survived by one sister-in-law, Suzanne Miller of Big Falls, and many other relatives and friends. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, a brother William Miller; two brothers-in-law, Edward Martin and William Tomcek; and two nephews, Donovan Dedolph and Chad Miller.

Funeral Service will be held on Friday, October 2nd at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Big Falls. Rev. Janice Kuder will officiate and burial will follow at Big Falls Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided at the cemetery by members of the American Legion Post 198 of Marion. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Beil-Didier Funeral Home, Clintonville, and on Friday from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at the church.
