Road work nears completion

Weyauwega wrapping Birdsall Street project

By Angie Landsverk

The reconstruction of a few blocks of Birdsall Street is wrapping up in the city of Weyauwega.

The project, from Pine to Merrimac streets, includes road, water and sewer improvements.

The paving of the street was underway the week of Sept. 21.

“Once the paving is done, there will be a little landscaping to clean the construction impact up and then the project will be completed pending inspections and approvals,” City Administrator Jeremy Schroeder told the Waupaca County Post.

He said the entire project was budgeted at $202,754.

When the common council met on Sept. 21, it approved a payment of $149,503 to Robert J. Immel Excavating, the contractor hired for the project.

That payment covers about 75% of the project’s cost to date.

Thus far, $39,759 has been paid for capital, $53,841 for water and $60,972 for sewer, according to Schroeder.

That totals $154.572.

A $5,068 retainer was subtracted from that amount, resulting in the approved $149,503 payment, he said.

Schroeder said asphalt and restoration will round out the remaining balance of the total project cost.

On Sept. 21, the council also approved a $12,654 change order related to the project.

“The change order was needed because when installing the new water line, the old line was right on top of the sanitary line and the connecting ‘t’ for the water main in Pine Street was asbestos so that had to be removed,” Schroeder said.

He told the Waupaca County Post the new water line had to be repositioned.

“The original intent was to hook up to the stub off of the Pine Street main,” Schroeder said.

The change order includes:

• $2,000 for additional tree removal.

• $6,240 for water valve over asbestos pipe adjustments.

• $3,253 for an additional water main tie-in on Pine Street.

• $201 for a salvaged valve with 6-inch adaptor.

• $960 for rock excavation and removal.

The city is also receiving a $24,446 Roads Improvement Program grant to go toward the cost of the reconstruction project.

Schroeder said the city will receive the grant when the project is completed.
