Area golfers qualify for sectionals

Waupaca golfer, Hortonville advance

One area individual golfer and one team have advanced to the second round of the WIAA girls’ golf state tournament.

Waupaca’s Kya Hume qualified as one of four individuals out of a nine-team Division 2 regional Oct. 1 at Foxfire Golf Club in Waupaca.

Meanwhile, Hortonville won the Division 1 Wausau East/Wausau West Regional Sept. 30 at Greenwood Hills Country Club in Wausau.

Waupaca Regional

Teams from Freedom, Marinette, Oconto Falls and Fox Valley Lutheran will join Hume and three other individual qualifiers Tuesday, Oct. 6, at The Prairie School Sectional at Ivers Grove Golf Links in Sturtevant.

Freedom won the meet with 390 points, followed by Marinette (424), Oconto Falls (432), Fox Valley Lutheran (458), Seymour (464), Luxemburg-Casco (466), Bonduel (471), Waupaca (505) and Oconto (535).

Hume led Waupaca with a round of 109 to place 12th overall. Waupaca’s other scores included Alexis Dahl (130); Leota Studzinski and Leila Freckett (133); and Ella Waite (156).

Freedom’s Callie Berg turned in the medalist round with an 82.

Also qualifying as individuals are Green NEW Lutheran’s Faith Flynn (91), Luxemburg-Casco’s Lydia VandenHouten (97) and Seymour’s Courtney Bunnell (100).

Wausau East/West Regional

Hortonville outshot Notre Dame by two shots to win the eight-team regional and will compete Oct. 6 at the Notre Dame Sectional at Thornberry Creek at Oneida in Oneida.

Team scores were Hortonville (363), Notre Dame (365), Wausau East/West (390), Wisconsin Rapids (423), Shawano (428), West De Pere (448), D.C. Everest (453), Marshfield (455).

Hortonville’s Kate Downie shared medalist honors with Wausau East/West after both golfers turned in a round of 82.

Hortonville’s other scores included Alix Kundinger (86), Emily Schmidt (90), Savannah Teale (105) and Reagan Sturn (107).

The first two teams and top three individuals not on a qualifying team will participate in the state meet. This year’s meet is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 12-13, at Black Wolf Run in Kohler.
