Welch to see action for Ravens

Iola-Scandy grad to play on special teams

Kristian Welch’s dream of playing in an NFL game is about to become a reality.

The 2010 Iola-Scandinavia High School graduate is expected to suit up for the Baltimore Ravens Sunday, Oct. 25, for their game with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Welch, who played college football at the University of Iowa, signed with the Ravens earlier this year as an undrafted free agent with the hope of making the team as a linebacker.

The Ravens released him in September, but signed him to their practice squad.

NFL teams can have up to 16 players on their respective practice squad. Squad players practice with the team, do not play in games or count against an active 53-man roster.

“He is on (the) practice squad yet,” said Welch’s father, Tim. “They can bring guys up two times from (the) practice squad. Then, after that, they have to declare him on (the 53-man roster).”

The Ravens are 4-1 on the season and are coming off of a 27-3 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

Welch missed some time with an injured hamstring, but is back to full strength, according to Tim Welch.

“Kristian will be in on several of the special teams packages,” he said. “He is pretty excited and ready to go.”
