Two area cross country teams and six individuals have made it through the first round of the WIAA postseason.

Runners competed Oct. 20 at subsectional meets in three divisions, with the top two teams and top five individuals not on a qualifying team advancing to the sectional round, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Oct. 23-24.

“Rosholt won the tie-breaker because we didn’t have a sixth-place tie-breaker runner,” Weyauwega-Fremont coach Nick Winn said. “Very heartbreaking for me, but up until a week ago, I didn’t even have a girls’ team, so at least we had a chance. Abby was a sure thing, but Carson and Melanie were outside chances. Very proud of all of them.”

The top two teams and the top five individuals not on a qualifying team will advance to the WIAA State Cross Country Championships, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 31.

The meet has been held for years at The Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids, but the WIAA has not announced a location for this year’s meet.

“I think they are going to try to make it central to as many teams as possible,” Winn said. “I don’t quite know what that means, if they already have sites located or not, but we don’t know much yet.

“I hope they don’t wait too long, though,” he said. “I like planning that stuff as early as I can.”
