A shorthanded Manawa football team came up short in its first game in more than two weeks.

A pair of blocked punts helped Clintonville take a 14-0 halftime lead and the Truckers held on for a 20-6 nonconference win over the Wolves Oct. 31.

Manawa hadn’t played a game since a 42-0 win over Northland Pines Oct. 16 and suited up without several players, including quarterback Mason Wiesner, because of positive COVID-19 test results.

Clintonville came into the game looking for its first win and used a pair of blocked punts to come up with a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter.

Zach Spaulding’s block led to the first score, as the Truckers took over on Manawa’s 9-yard line and Nathan Morse and Cole Rosenow hooked up for a touchdown pass on the next play.

Manawa’s next drive also ended with a blocked punt that gave Clintonville the ball on the Wolves’ 25-yard line. Morse capped the drive with a 9-yard quarterback keeper and the Truckers had a 14-0 lead with 7:05 remaining in the first half.

Manawa’s touchdown, Dakota Stroud’s 56-yard pass to Riley Krenke, came with 6:05 to go in the third quarter, but turned out to be the Wolves’ only points of the day.

Klay Barkow’s interception set up the Truckers’ final score. Clintonville took over on the Manawa 30-yard drive and Ryan Wegenke capped the drive with a 1-yard run with 2:24 to go in the game.

Clintonville outgained the Wolves 191-175. Stroud and Adam Zielke combined to complete 13 of 34 passes for 153 yards for Manawa, but also combined for four interceptions.

Morse completed 16 of 27 yards for 134 yards and also led the Truckers in rushing with 42 yards.

Deion Stroud led Manawa with 45 rushing yards, but the Truckers held the Wolves to 22 yards as a team.

Both teams have games scheduled for Friday, Nov. 6. Manawa will host Wittenberg-Birnamwood in a Central Wisconsin Conference-Large matchup, while Clintonville will finish the regular season with a Packerland Conference game at Oconto.
