Weyauwega students observe National Fire Prevention Week

“Serve up Fire Safety in the Kitchen” was the theme of this year’s National Fire Prevention Week.

The week was observed Oct. 4-10, and included a local poster contest centered on that theme.

The Weyauwega Fire Department recently announced the winners of its contest.

The first-place winners now compete at the state level.

The first-grade winners are Sage Hoth (first), Madelyn Haase (second), Ashton Kuenzi (third) and Daniela Gonzalez (fourth).

Hoth and Haase are students at St. Peter Lutheran School, and Kuenzi and Gonzalez are students at Weyauwega Elementary.

In second grade, the winners are Syler Radtke (first), Nataly Rojas (second), Justin Schimmel (third) and Emilee Falke (fourth).

Radtke attends St. Peter Lutheran School. Rojas, Schimmel and Falke are students at Weyauwega Elementary.

The third-grade winners are Elizabeth Cruz (first), Liam Johnson (second), Bristol Lind (third) and Isabel Pankow (fourth).

Cruz and Lind attend Weyauwega Elementary, while Johnson and Pankow attend St. Peter Lutheran School.

In fourth grade, the winners are Emma Carson (first), Meredith Kiedrowski (second), Kayln Wright (third) and Cece Nieves (fourth).

Carson is a student at St. Peter Lutheran School, while Kiedrowski, Wright and Nieves are students at Weyauwega Elementary.

The fifth-grade winners are Carson Zielke (first), Ariana Zabel (second), Conor McGlin (third) and Gwynne Willcut (fourth).

All of them are students at St. Peter Lutheran School.

Members of the department’s Fire Prevention Committeee visited students at St. Peter Lutheran School on Oct. 22.

Firefighter Jim Nehring went into the individual classrooms to present information about fire prevention safety.

He also answered questions.

Firefighter Debbie Buchholz helped students handle the hose lines to spray water at the houses, ringing bells and swinging targets.

Students stayed under the overhang, so they were able to stay dry.

They went outside one at a time, while the rest of the class stayed warm inside.

The Fire Prevention Committee appreciated the opportunity to visit the school during this COVID-19 time.
