Football playoffs start Nov. 13

Waupaca forfeits FVL game

By Greg Seubert

Six area teams will open the WIAA state football playoffs with a home game.

The WIAA released brackets for the first round of the playoffs, with games scheduled to be played at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13.

Unlike past years, where teams had to qualify for the postseason based on their record, all teams were eligible for playoffs this year.

Also unlike past years, the 2020 season will not end with a series of state championship games at Madison’s Camp Randall Stadium.

Amherst received the only No. 1 seed among area teams, as the Falcons will host fourth-seeded Peshtigo in Division 4.

Hortonville, Clintonville, Manawa, Weyauwega-Fremont and Iola-Scandinavia also have home games scheduled, while New London has a road game.

Waupaca was also scheduled to play a Division 2 game at Fox Valley Lutheran, but has forfeited that game. Waupaca received a No. 4 seed and was scheduled to play at No. 1 seed Fox Valley Lutheran.

“(Coach Bennett Hansen) reached out to me this weekend and explained that we won’t have enough guys to be able to play,” Waupaca activities director Joe Sbertoli said. “Our numbers dropped too low, unfortunately.”

In games that were still on the schedule as of 9 a.m. Nov. 10, No. 2 Hortonville will host No. 3 Germantown in Division 1; No. 3 New London will head to No. 2 Kewaskum in Division 2; No. 2 Clintonville will host No. 3 Winneconne in Division 3; No. 2 Manawa and Weyauwega-Fremont will host Mishicot and Howards Grove, respectively, in Division 5; and No. 2 Iola-Scandinavia will put its 7-0 record on the line against No. 3 Hurley in Division 6.

The brackets, first released Nov. 7, included 32 teams in division 1-5 and 36 in Division 6.

Since then, however, several teams have forfeited their Level 1 game, including Waukesha North, Franklin and Burlington (Division 1); Waupaca (Division 2); Tomahawk and Shoreland Lutheran (Division 4); Westfield, Ladysmith, Osseo-Fairchild, Colfax and Dodgeland (Division 5); and Lake Holcombe/Cornell, Flambeau, Crandon and Coleman in Division 6.

Level 1 winners will advance to season-ending Level 2 games at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19.

The playoffs follow a seven-game regular season that didn’t start until late September.

While some teams such as Iola-Scandinavia, Hortonville and Amherst played seven games, others played four, five or six.
