Mayor Richard Beggs will take a leave of absence from his duties as mayor due to medical reasons.

Beggs informed the city council at its Nov. 10 meeting about his upcoming leave of absence.

Beggs said his absence would be for at least two weeks, but could be longer.

“I have a tumor right in front of my brain, right on top of where my optic nerves cross and it is pressing on the optic nerves and causing my vision to deteriorate rapidly,” Beggs said. “I’m having increasingly difficulty reading.”

Beggs told the council he had brain surgery scheduled for Nov. 17 to remove the tumor.

He added that he plans to return to his mayoral duties once he recovers from surgery.

During Beggs’ absence, Council President Mike Hankins will perform the city’s mayoral duties.

Also related to Beggs’ absence, the council approved Jim Supanich as a temporary member of the Personnel Committee.
