Local deer harvest up

Waupaca County’s total up 12.2%

Waupaca County hunters harvested nearly 5,600 white-tailed deer during the state’ gun deer season, which wrapped up Nov. 29.

According to preliminary totals from the state Department of Natural Resources, hunters that headed out in Waupaca County shot 5,595 deer, including 2,353 antlered and 3,242 antlerless deer.

That’s a 12.2% jump from the 2019 total of 4,985 deer.

Preliminary numbers for other area counties include:

• Outagamie County: 1,876 deer (798 antlered, 1,078 antlerless); up 13.3% from 1,656 in 2019.

• Winnebago County: 1,031 deer (500 antlered, 531 antlerless); up 23.9% from 832 in 2019.

• Portage County: 4,397 deer (1,807 antlered, 2,590 antlerless); up 20.5% from 3,650 in 2019.

• Waushara County: 3,709 deer (1,627 antlered, 2,082 antlerless); up 27.8% from 2,903 in 2019.

• Shawano County: 5,904 deer (2,329 antlered, 3,575 antlerless); up 8.3% from 5,451 in 2019.

Marathon County reported the highest harvest with 6,669 deer, followed by Shawano (5,904), Vernon (5,596), Waupaca (5,595) and Polk (5,330).
