Deputies find meth following crash

A one-vehicle crash in Farmington led to felony charges.

Corey D. Volden, 63, Appleton, is charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and obstructing an officer.

John A. Selman, 46, Neenah, is charged with a fourth offense of operating while intoxicated.

Jeremy R. Merritt, 40, Appleton, was arrested on an active warrant issued by the Department of Corrections.

At 4:19 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, the Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office received multiple 911 calls regarding a rollover crash on State Highway 54 east of County Trunk Q.

One caller reported an occupant was still in the vehicle, unconscious.

Deputies David Huberty, Paul Hanneman and Andrew Thorpe responded, as well as Waupaca firefighters and Gold Cross paramedics.

The driver, identified as Selman, was injured and eventually transported to ThedaCare Medical Center-Waupaca for treatment.

According to the criminal complaint, tire marks at the scene indicated the green Ford Expedition was on State 54 when it drifted into the north shoulder, then veered across the roadway, entered the south ditch and rolled over.

Thorpe spoke to a man standing outside the vehicle.

He identified himself as Volden and reportedly said he and Selman were the only two occupants of the vehicle.

Employees at the nearby Cottage Garden Farm told Huberty a third man had been in the vehicle when it crashed.

He was standing outside the store and was later identified as Merritt.

Although he was walking with a limp, the man initially denied being in the crash, the complaint says.

After he was handcuffed, Merritt admitted to being in the vehicle.

Merritt was taken into custody after Thorpe learned there was an active warrant for his arrest.

On July 11, 2018, Merritt was convicted of felony failure to pay child support and placed on seven years of probation.

At that time, he owed more than $29,000 in back payments.

Thorpe initially arrested Volden for obstructing because he lied about who were the occupants of the vehicle.

During a subsequent search, the officers found meth and drug paraphernalia, allegedly belonging to Volden.

Criminal complaints say that both Volden and Selman said they used meth earlier that day.

Volden was released on a $1,500 signature bond.

Selman was released on a $2,000 signature bond.

Merritt is under supervised work release in Dodge County.
