Ice skating rink now open

Located in Waupaca’s lower South Park

The city of Waupaca has opened an ice skating rink by South Park’s lower shelter.

The rink is located in the parking lot and open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

Parks and Recreation Director Andrew Whitman said the plan was to make a rink on Shadow Lake.

However, the ice on the lake had not been very good so far this year, he said.

“We weren’t ready to give up on an ice rink quite yet, so we decided to give this a try again after looking at some ice rinks from other communities,” Whitman said.

In the past, the Parks and Recreation Department tried making a rink at Swan Park.

It did so for two winters but had some issues there, Whitman said.

That included it not being very level there, deer walking on it before it was frozen and some vandalism, he recalled.

“We then tried to switch to the lake ice rink but have not had good ice the last two years,” Whitman said. “If it works well this year, we will look to continue and possibly grow the rink in the future.”
