Felony arrest follows overdose

Waupaca man also charged with child neglect

George F. Meating Jr., 34, Waupaca, is charged with felony possession of narcotics, misdemeanor child neglect and misdemeanor bail jumping.

On Jan. 27, Waupaca Police Sgt. Wes Zube responded to an ambulance call to an apartment on the 100 block of Maple Street.

When he arrived at the apartment, Zube found Meating unconscious.

According to the criminal complaint, Meating was not breathing and his pinpoint pupils did not react to light.

Initially, Zube could not find a pulse.

Zube requested dispatch to advise Gold Cross ambulance to bring Narcan right away.

When Meating regained consciousness, he showed symptoms of drug withdrawal, such as chills and nausea, the complaint says.

Meating denied taking opioids and said he had just fallen asleep.

Meating’s 11-year-old child had found Meating unconscious.

Meating’s mother said Meating’s child had been placed in her custody, and she allowed Meating to live with her because he had no place to go.

Dispatch confirmed Meating was on probation and had active warrants through Wisconsin Rapids, Stevens Point and Waupaca County.

Waupaca Police Officer Thomas Grant found suspected fentanyl in Meating’s wallet in the bedroom he shared with his child.

On Dec. 1, 2020, Meating failed to appear in Waupaca County Circuit Court on a traffic violation.

The court issued a warrant for his arrest.

On July 25, 2016, Waupaca County convicted Meating of felony delivery of heroin.

He was sentenced to nine months in jail with six months stayed.

On Sept. 25, 2017, the court convicted Meating of failure to report to jail and sentenced him to 30 more days in jail.

Meating remains in custody on a $500 cash bond.
