Board chooses ‘Warhawks’

Weyauwega-Fremont school teams have new name

The Weyauwega-Fremont School Board unanimously chose “Warhawks” for the district’s new mascot name when it met virtually on Monday, Feb. 22.

Matt Betz was absent.

District Administrator Phillip Tubbs brought the recommendation forward following a discussion on the topic earlier this month.

He told the board the subcommittee recently met to discuss the tone and personality of the logo, pending that evening’s decision.

Suggestions are to be shared with the graphic designer who will work on developing a logo, Tubbs said.

The designer is expected to create three mock logos, which will go before the subcommittee.

“Warkhawks” was the name that topped the results of the district’s recent survey.

A total of 37.1% of those who responded to the survey voted for Warhawks.

That was followed by 24.9% for River Hawks, 22.8% for Red Hawks and 15.1% for Hawks.

Those were the four choices in the survey that ended on Feb. 1.

The school board voted unanimously last fall to retire “Indians” as the high school’s name and mascot.

That action officially retired a name and image the high school had not been using.

The district phased out using the word “Indians” on both athletic and band uniforms a number of years ago, and started using a W-F swoosh instead.
