County X speed limit lowered

Supervisors approve 25 mph on Wolf River Avenue in New London

By Robert Cloud

The Waupaca County Board voted to lower the speed limit on a portion of County Trunk X in New London.

The speed limit has been lowered from 35 mph to 25 mph on West Wolf River Avenue (County X) from Oshkosh Street to New London’s western city limit.

New London Common Council requested that the County Highway Commission make the change.

Fred Zaug, who is a member of New London Common Council, the Waupaca County Board and the Highway Commission, brought the city’s request to the county.

During discussion of the proposed speed revision, Supervisor Pat Craig, of Royalton, said she believed 35 mph was appropriate for that section of road.

She also suggested it could become a speed trap.

Zaug said County X becomes congested during the walleye run in the spring and during special events in New London.

He also noted the New London School District’s bus garage is located across the street from staff parking.

Supervisor Joe McClone said the school buses also make their gasoline purchases for the county highway garage located on County X.

Craig cast the lone vote against lowering the speed limit.
