Corrections officers identify suspect from Facebook photo

Waupaca County Circuit Court issued a warrant for the arrest of Melvin A. Colley, 27, Appleton.

Colley is charged with taking a vehicle without consent and three counts of bail jumping.

In Outagamie County, he also faces two counts of taking a vehicle without consent, possession of methamphetamine, possession of narcotics and bail jumping.

On Feb. 24, Waupaca County Deputy Britanny Mathewson was dispatched to the Dollar General in Fremont in response to a stolen car complaint.

Witnesses described the suspect as an African American who walked about 10 feet into the store, stopped, then looked around before leaving.

Store employees provided a security camera photo of the suspect, which the sheriff’s office posted on its Facebook page.

Several officers at the county jail identified the man in the photo as Colley.

Colley had been arrested on a warrant for failure to appear in court and booked into the jail on Tuesday, Feb. 23.
He was released from custody on Wednesday, Feb. 24.

Colley was wearing the same clothes when he was released as the man was wearing in the photo.

Mathewson asked Appleton police to visit the address Colley gave to both the court and the jail.

An Appleton officer spoke with a woman residing at the address, who said Colley had moved out six months earlier.

The car was found abandoned in Appleton.
