Ravens plan to keep Welch

Iola native receives tender offer

By Greg Seubert

It looks like Kristian Welch will be back with the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens for a second season.

The Ravens signed the Iola-Scandinavia High School graduate as an undrafted rookie last year after four seasons at the University of Iowa.

The team announced March 10 it had officially handed out tenders to two exclusive rights free agents, including Welch, a linebacker who appeared in 10 games last season.

Although Welch was in on only eight plays as a linebacker in the team’s final game of the regular season, he was on the field for 41% of the Ravens’ special teams plays.

Welch started his rookie season on the Ravens’ practice squad, but was promoted to the team’s roster in November.

He finished the season with four tackles and is listed as third at middle linebacker on the team’s depth chart.

The Ravens finished 12-6 last season and advanced to the second round of the NFL playoffs.
