Smith running as write in

Fourth candidate for Fremont village trustee

By Angie Landsverk

Kathy Smith is running as a write-in candidate for a seat on the Fremont Village Board.

She made the decision a few weeks ago.

Smith is retired and said, “I have the time.”

She has lived in Fremont most of her life.

Smith was 9 years old when her parents bought the former Orihula Resort.

She grew up working there,

Her husband was in the U.S. Army, which meant they moved around a bit before returning to Fremont around 1970.

She worked as a certified nursing assistant and has fostered someone for about 15 years as a certified adult family home.

Smith also worked part time for the village about 20 years ago, helping with maintenance.

She has ideas for the village, particularly for its three parks.

“I’d like to see more activities for children and adults,” Smith said.

One of her ideas is exploring disc golf at one of the parks, and seeking grant funds to cover the cost.

Smith volunteers with a number of organizations.

She is a member of Friends of Fremont, Friends of Neuschafer Community Library, Fremont Area Historical Society, the Waupaca County Republican Party and local American Legion auxiliary.

Smith is also part of Light Up Fremont.

“I’m interested in helping Fremont grow,” she said. “We want it to be safe and enjoyable place for our friends who come to visit.”

Prior to her decision to run as a write-in candidate, the three candidates for the three open trustee seats were running unopposed in the April 6 election.

Nominated at the caucus in January were John Kohl, Bobbi Marks and Kristine Looker-Buss.

Kohl has been a village trustee for almost 24 years.

Marks is serving her fifth term on the board.

Looker-Buss is a first-time candidate.

Rick Coenen is not seeking re-election.

Also not seeking re-election this April is Village President Dan Sambs.

Gene Goode is running unopposed for that position.
