Iola accepts ILA payment plan

The Iola Village Board approved a payment plan from Iola Living Assistance, which owes the village $94,876 in past-due sewer and water bills.

Village Attorney Bruce Meagher told the board at its April 12 meeting that ILA has filed for bankruptcy protection from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Eastern District of Wisconsin.

ILA recently submitted a payment plan addressing the debt. According to the proposal, ILA would pay off the debt within 10 years at an interest rate of 4.25%, bringing the payment to $972 per month for 120 months.

“They have entered into a couple of other agreements that they could not live up to,” Meagher said. “Hopefully, they will live up to this one. The village is better off here because they are now under the supervision of the bankruptcy court.”

The board unanimously approved the proposal.

In other business, the board approved the transfer of a Class B liquor license previously held by Northern Lights to Iola Old Car Show Inc.

Obtaining this license will allow for wedding receptions and other functions to take place inside the building where Otto’s Bar and Beer Garden are located on the car show grounds.

“Not only would this give us additional banquet potential, it will also give us additional potential during the show,” said Joe Opperman, the car show’s executive director. “This is something that is not only an asset for us, but also the community, to attract additional festivals and events.”

Currently, Otto’s Bar is only open during the car show.

The license would be effective until June 30, 2021, at which time it will be up for renewal.

The next meeting of the Iola Village Board will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, May 10.
