Improvements eyed for Silver Lake

Meeting scheduled for May 22

The Scandinavia Silver Lake Rehabilitation District has been awarded one of 50 matching fund grants from the state Department of Natural Resources for lakes education and planning projects.

The Silver Lake Management Committee has been formed to oversee the project and will host a meeting at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 22, in the Memorial Park Trade Show Building, 110 Industrial Park Drive, Scandinavia.

The meeting is open to the public and free coffee and snacks will be served.

“Previous studies have been done on Silver Lake, but this will be the first comprehensive study,” committee chairman Kristy Stacy said. “One purpose of this management planning project is to search for realistic solutions to alleviate impaired navigation due to excessive levels of aquatic plant growth during the summer.”

Onterra LLC, a lake management planning firm out of De Pere, will assess the condition of the lake, provide education on lake ecology, and assist the district in discovering feasible actions for improvement.

Onterra was chosen primarily due to its experience with other lakes in the area, according to Stacy.

“As part of the study, property owners within the lake district will receive a survey to gather community opinions on the status of the lake, how they utilize the lake and what they would like to see done with it,” she said. “The responses will be anonymous and it is important to remember that the priorities and actions for managing the lake are the responsibility of those who are part of the lake district.”
